From the recording Undercurrent
Waveway first appeared on the 2019 album "A Fearful Wonder," although Max had begun working on the song in 2011 - years before KOZEN had even been started. This song is unique in that Max specifically set out to write a metal song on the piano. Having written essentially a piano ballad, Max then added metal arrangements that culminated in the song that listeners will recognize from the album. This version of the song has been slowed down and stripped of its metal elements, revealing the piano ballad that has always been at its core. However, the first verse of the song, alongside a few other lines, has been completely rewritten, in order to suit the slower pace and more solemn tone.
The guitar solo in the middle section is similar to the one on the album with the exception that the ending lines of the solo descend instead of ascending - highlighting that this version of Waveway is the musical inverse of its predecessor.
Maxwell Kozen - Vocals, Programming
Sid Harris - Piano
Jericho Leal - Acoustic Guitar
Lyrics
Love I need I give away
Love in vain – the price I pay
Love I need I give away
I’ve trained my heart for this mistake
In my disgrace
I watched you fade away
I watched you wave and then I forgot your face
Bewildered minds
Grasp at the wasted time
Weary from wondering why I tried to make you mine
Oh my soul
How have you grown cold
I siphoned passion from another day
Another face
Another one I almost chased
Another one that got away
I let you fade
Love I need I give away
Love in vain – the price I pay
Love I need I give away
I’ve trained my heart for this mistake
Evermore becoming fake
It’s a sin sick wish I make
One of many hearts I’ll break
I’ve trained my heart for this mistake
Awake before it so desires
My heart lights me with this dark fire
I make believe sincerity
I forced my heart to fall in love
Before it was ready
Love I need I give away
Love in vain – the price I pay
Love I need I give away
I’ve trained my heart for this mistake
Evermore becoming fake
It’s a sin sick wish I make
One of many hearts I’ll break
I’ve trained my heart for this mistake
Regret knows my name,
Regret knows my face,
My hand,
Your heart torn through your ribcage
And through skin
I never meant for you to truly let me in
