"I’ve never heard anything like this before.”
These are the words that people find themselves saying the first time they experience the live phenomenon that is KOZEN. Hailing from Toronto, Canada, KOZEN is a band whose eclectic sound reflects the diversity of their hometown. Founded on the musical premise of taking the speed and grit of metal guitar and fusing it with the harmonic sensibilities of jazz and R&B, the band somehow manages to be a coherent musical mosaic, worthy of the jaw-dropped stares of disbelief they often meet.
Oddly enough, coincidence is the force that brought this band together. Guitarists and to-the-bone metal-heads Maxwell and Jericho met in a university philosophy class. Gospel musicians Jonathan Aristide and Sid Harrison (Overflow Worship) ran into Max at a local music store. The initial lineup was rounded off by Max’s longtime friend Kyron Newbury (ex-Urban Preacher), who from 2014 through 2016 served as the band’s drummer and spearheaded the recording of their 2016 double EP “Swimming To The Stars”. Midway through 2016, Newbury stepped down from the band, and Jared Leal - Jericho’s younger brother - joined as the new drummer. The band marked the lineup change with a single and music video called Barricade.
Since the release of Swimming To The Stars, the band has performed through southern Ontario alongside some of the most exciting new acts in Canadian rock music, including the likes of Curses, KINK, Polarity, Romancer, Static Prevails, Odd Ones, Carried Away, Arbors Lane, and more. In July of 2017, they embarked on their first ever tour alongside Quebec experimental hardcore group We Throw Flowers. With more new music on the horizon, the boys in KOZEN are set to prove their worth as a band that rocks as hard as any other, while defying the stereotypes and limitations of genre. You may have never heard anything like this before, but you’re about to want more.
